I had forgotten about this until I heard about Max’s death, but it really happened. One of the other kids was Mike, a soft-spoken, artistic boy who was openly gay at a time when that was unusual for a teenager — at least a male one. I think he and I were the most affected. I definitely remember that we had both fallen in love not with Max’s character, the knight Antonius Block, but with Nils Poppe’s character, the visionary traveling entertainer Jof (or Joseph in some translations). He’s so sweet and loving, his faith so pure, against this backdrop of horror and despair. I still fall in love with Jof every time I see The Seventh Seal. And Jöns the squire a little bit too.
