By rights ECT shouldn’t work. In the thirties a guy named Meduna noticed that hardly anyone was epileptic and schizophrenic; he theorized that maybe if he gave a schizophrenic convulsions, they’d chase away the schizophrenia. This turned out not to work at all, but in the process of messing around with it doctors discovered that convulsive therapy did sometimes work for people with mood disorders. To this day, no one knows why.
