It might have made more sense for me to draw Old Hemingway here, with the big white beard and the turtleneck sweater, but I don’t draw two versions of any other historical figure and anyway it would be kind of confusing. Moreover, I prefer the idea that the stix version of every author represents the essence of that author and exists independent of concepts like age. It’s easier with Poe and Kafka because they died at forty, and with Flannery O’Connor, who died at thirty-nine. Oh, and it occurs to me that I did draw Old Hemingway once! So there you go.
