I’ve encountered several midrashim about Jonah, but this one (from Pirkey d’Rabbi Eliezer) is my favorite. Before Leviathan flees, Jonah tells it off, too: he says, “For your sake I have come down to see your dwelling-place, because in the future I am destined to tie a rope around your tongue and raise you up to slaughter you for the great feast of the Tzaddikim.” Which is awesome because it’s badass but also because it’s a big fat lie: we know why Jonah’s really down there. Still, I wonder if he will get to raise Leviathan up for the great feast at the end of the world (where the righteous will also get to partake of Behemoth and Ziz).
